sometimes, to find life's joy you have to stop and look

for the girl who would write
there is nothing quite like waking in the middle of the night to a loud pounding on the door of your tiny apartment. in my experience, it goes like this. you climb out of bed, still foggy with sleep, and walk slowly and anxiously to the door - hoping for the best but expecting the worst. you look through the peep hole, but no one is there. against your better judgement, you open the door; curiosity has taken hold. After looking to the left and right, you finally look down and your confusion fades as you notice the giant plate of cookies now occupying your welcome mat.
have you ever heard of a cookie-drive-by? if you haven't, it must be because you haven't yet met my friend bryn.
i feel grateful to say that my college experience (and even here and there in the years following) is filled with bryn stories. like the time we spontaneously established the first ever university of illinois rail-sliding club. or when we stayed up until 4 am at amy's house, sewing felt letters onto cheap sweatshirts, creating hockey blockey (which you probably don't understand if you aren't familiar with the university of illinois and the block i. basically, we were hockey team super fans).
beyond all of the fun (and there was a lot), my friendship with bryn is the stuff of kindreds. i'm not sure how it even happened. with her in detroit and me in san francisco, or her in orlando and me in boston, somehow our paths seem to wind in and around one another's in ways that can be described only as providential.
and that brings me to my point.
bryn has recently accepted a position as a missionary journalist in the communications department for the christian organization cru global. i know bryn to be a talented writer, ripe with stories to tell. in her own words, bryn is 'rejoicing in the faithful call to obedience from Psalm 105:1-2:
oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples. sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders.
'
one of the requirements of this position is that bryn raise her entire salary through the generous support of donors. a few weeks ago, i received an email from bryn asking her close friends for some creative ideas to help her meet her support goal during these difficult financial times. and though i was clueless at first about what to do, i think i've come up with something.
on november 24 of this year, hours before we all sit down to give thanks and break bread, i will lace up a pair of running shoes and try my hand (or i guess my legs) at my first half-marathon. rather than run(ish) those 13.1 miles only for myself, i'm hoping to raise some cash for my friend bryn in the meantime!
and so, here's my ask:
would you consider donating
$13
($1/mile) on behalf of my pavement pounding in support of my friend bryn?
i'm hoping to raise $600+ for my friend. if you are interested, please use the donate button below to give through paypal. i will collect the money and give one big check to bryn after race day.
please feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns.
